Kiva Project

Kiva Project

Kiva.org is used to help others start or grow a business, help others in need or people who want to help those in need, and have a good education. The goal is to have each person reach his or her amount of money they want/need. They cover costs through donations and from grants and sponsors. The website is used to not only lend people money but to have people connect with their borrower. You can led money, get it back, and lend it again. “Lifting one to lift many,” Kiva allows people to make a life or achieve a goal for themselves which can end up helping an entire community.
One borrower that I found on the website is named Sebastian and wants $275 to invest in his business of buying and selling beans. Besides his bean business, Sebastian is a day laborer working on all different kinds of activities. A drought hit his country recently and he hasn’t had enough money to buy beans since the price went up. With the money that people lend, he hopes to improve his family’s quality of life, cover his household expenses, and strengthen his business. Another borrower on the website is named Khouloud and wants $2,500 to pay for medical surgery expenses. Khouloud is a 20-year-old single Lebanese woman that is a teacher most the day and then works at a beauty salon in the afternoon. She works hard to pay for her own expenses and hopes to keep working and developing her skills to achieve her goals in life.

Sebastian and Khouloud both live in areas that don’t have as much money as most countries and there are few jobs available. It was hard for Sebastian to earn money for his beans when there was a lot of chaos going around after the drought. Khouloud also works hard to pay for her expenses but since she doesn’t get paid much because of the area she lives in, she needs help. With the help of a loan, Sebastian can help his family and Khouloud can pay for her surgery.
